“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” – Luke 9:23
Following Christ is the greatest journey a person can embark on, but it is not an easy one. It requires faith, sacrifice, and a heart fully devoted to God. The world offers temporary comfort and distractions, but Jesus calls us to something greater—a life of purpose, love, and eternal reward.
Many want the blessings of God, but few are willing to walk the narrow path (Matthew 7:13-14). The truth is, following Jesus is costly—but what we gain is far greater than anything we leave behind.
The Cost of Following Christ
Jesus never promised an easy life to His followers. In fact, He warned us that following Him would require sacrifice.
“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” – John 15:18
Choosing Jesus means choosing a different way of life—one that may go against culture, society, and even the expectations of those around us. It means:
1. Saying No to Sin and the Temptations of the World
The world constantly pulls us toward selfish desires, materialism, and instant gratification. But Jesus calls us to turn away from sin and walk in holiness.
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” – Romans 12:2
This means letting go of: ✖ Unforgiveness and bitterness ✖ Lust, greed, and pride ✖ Dishonesty, gossip, and harmful behaviors
It’s not always easy, but when we say no to the world, we say yes to God’s best for us.
2. Facing Opposition and Rejection for Our Faith
As believers, we may experience moments where our faith is mocked, misunderstood, or even rejected by others. Jesus warned us that following Him would not always be accepted by the world.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 5:10
Being a follower of Christ is not about seeking approval from the world—it’s about staying faithful to the One who gave His life for us.
3. Trusting God Even When We Don’t Understand His Plan
There will be times when following Christ means stepping into the unknown. We may not always understand why certain prayers go unanswered, why we face struggles, or why life takes unexpected turns. But faith means trusting that God’s plan is greater than our understanding.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.” – Isaiah 55:8
We walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). When we surrender to God’s will, we find that His ways are always higher, better, and filled with purpose.
The Reward of Following Christ
Though the cost is great, the reward is greater. When we choose to follow Jesus, we receive His presence, His peace, and His promises.
1. A Deep and Personal Relationship with Jesus
Unlike the fleeting relationships of the world, Jesus offers a deep, unshakable connection. He is not a distant God—He is a loving Savior who walks with us.
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5
We are never alone in our struggles. When we follow Him, we walk in His presence, guided by His Spirit, and strengthened by His love.
2. Freedom and Peace That the World Cannot Give
The world promises happiness, but Christ offers true peace. When we surrender our lives to Him, we no longer have to carry the weight of our burdens alone.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28
In Christ, we find freedom from: ✅ Guilt and shame ✅ Fear and anxiety ✅ The pressures of the world
His peace is greater than anything the world can offer.
3. Transformation from the Inside Out
Following Jesus is not just about external behavior—it’s about heart transformation. The more we walk with Him, the more He changes us to reflect His love, patience, and character.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
As we grow in faith, we begin to see the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) in our lives—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
4. A Life of Eternal Significance
The things of this world will fade away, but what we do for Christ will last forever. When we live for Him, we are building treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:19-20).
“And this is the promise that He made to us—eternal life.” – 1 John 2:25
The sacrifices we make now cannot compare to the glory that awaits us in eternity.
“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” – 2 Corinthians 4:17
How to Stay Committed to Following Jesus
Following Christ is a daily choice. It requires intentionality, faith, and perseverance. Here are some practical ways to stay strong in your walk with Him:
1. Spend Time in Prayer Every Day
Prayer is our direct line of communication with God. It strengthens our relationship with Him and aligns our hearts with His will.
“Pray without ceasing.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:17
2. Read and Meditate on God’s Word
The Bible is our guidebook for life. It reveals God’s heart, His promises, and His direction for us.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” – Psalm 119:105
3. Surround Yourself with Other Believers
We were never meant to walk this journey alone. Being part of a strong, faith-filled community encourages us to stay committed and accountable.
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together.” – Hebrews 10:24-25
4. Live with Boldness and Trust God in All Circumstances
Being a follower of Christ means standing firm in your faith, even when the world tries to shake you.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9
A Call to Follow Jesus
Jesus is calling each of us to follow Him—not just in words, but in action. He calls us to:
✔ Seek Him daily – through prayer, worship, and reading His Word ✔ Live with faith and obedience – choosing His will over our own ✔ Love others as He loved us – being a light to the world ✔ Endure hardships with hope – knowing that the reward is far greater than the cost
“Whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.” – Matthew 10:39
Following Jesus may not always be easy, but it is always worth it. Will you take up your cross and follow Him today?
